VCO: Getting the attention it deserves

ONCE MISTAKENly thought to be bad because of its saturated fat content, the oil coming from the coconut is now known to be unique and could actually help keep one’s heart and blood vessels healthy.

“The saturated fat in coconut oil is unlike the fat found in meat or other vegetable fats. Once wrongly accused of increasing cholesterol levels, coconut oil is now actually being used by doctors in the treatment of a variety of disorders. It has been shown to improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, and protect against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections,” said Dr. Ed Lalusis, inventor and owner of Growrich Food Manufacturing Inc. that first came up with an encapsulated formulation (500 mg) of the VCO.

He said there are scientific studies validating that the major component of VCO, lauric acid, is an effective anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal compound. A natural derivative of lauric acid, monolaurin, has been shown to be a potent disease fighter.

“When taken internally, lauric acid turns into a compound known as monolaurin. It is this compound that is believed to fight viral pathogens that protects the body from bacteria, viruses and infections from parasites. Moreover, the VCO also causes the metabolic rate to increase, hence helps reduce weight and is safe and beneficial for diabetics,” said Lalusis.

But to be able to benefit from this, Lalusis said VCO must be kept in good condition and be able to retain its health benefits (when taken out from its packaging), which could only be achieved if it’s properly shielded from the elements.

Simple as it may seem, the encapsulation of the VCO, according to Lalusis, prevented two problems often encountered with VCO in liquid form: spoilage (turn rancid more quickly) and clumping when exposed to cool air.

With the packaging, Lalusis explained they were able to sell the product in countries with cooler climate (a common complaint is the VCO that is frozen solid inside the bottle) and thus, gave the VCO wider market exposure.

Lalusis recalled that VCO got the world’s attention after Dr. Bruce Fife, a naturopathic doctor and the author of “The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil” declared coconut oil as the healthiest oil on earth.

“Indeed, the VCO is getting global reputation as the healthiest and versatile oil in the world. This also means the Philippines is getting an excellent exposure worldwide considering that the country is one of the best sources of VCO,” Lalusis said.

This international accolade only validated what the late Dr. Conrado Dayrit has started in the early 1980s when he pioneered a clinical study on VCO’s positive effect on HIV-AIDS as well as authoring the book “The Truth about Coconut Oil.”

For spearheading national and global interest on Philippine coconut oil, the VCO Philippines, an association of virgin coconut oil producers and traders, conferred on him the title of Father of VCO in 2003.
